CO Road Trip Day 11 - drive to Piedmont, OK

This was a fun day.  Since Tucumcari is right on the New Mexico/Texas border, it didn't take us long to get to a new state!

In an hour and a half, we were outside Amarillo at a popular roadside tourist attraction -- Cadillac Ranch!  Back in 1974, ten Cadillac cars were buried nose-deep in a straight line in a field.  People added graffiti to the cars, and now, in 2022, you can buy spray paint on site to add your own artistic flair. We didn't last too long because it was hot without any shade, but we did add some color to the cars and find some geocaches while we were there.

Someone gave us their half-use spray paint can, and Cooper was thrilled to make his mark!

Note to self: don't entrust a spray paint can to a three-year-old. Colson got paint all over his hand and it took a lot of hand sanitizer and scrubbing (and time!) to get it off.

The paint is just caked on there in layer after layer.

Walking back to the van

While the others went to the van, Calvin and I found a couple more nearby geocaches.

We stopped for lunch at a neat playground in Amarillo that had a splash pad to cool off in the Texas heat!

I liked that there were Texas-themed fountains (a cactus, rattlesnake, lizard)

Carter liked chasing the ducks

And Cooper took a short walk with me to find a geocache on the other side of the pond.

We still had 3.5 hours until our destination for the night, but we stopped at the Oklahoma welcome center. Another state!

We were greeted with a sidewalk chalk welcome at the country home of my best childhood friend Penny, who lives on the outskirts of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Even though it was hot outside, we played outside and explored the land for awhile. Cooper loved hanging out in the chicken coop!

The little boys loved the little play house.

The red Oklahoma dirt was still on our shoes days later.

Hanging out with Penny's youngest son under the treehouse.

Pizza and watermelon for dinner!

The boys LOVED playing with Penny's kids. This was their favorite overnight stop because they had kids to play with!

Jamie served up ice cream cones for us from Braum's.

We cooled off inside by playing some games together.

And then went back outside for some fishing in the little lake. In this picture, Calvin was helping Maya try to find some worms for bait.

No luck on the worms, but they ended up using grasshoppers as bait!

The boys had never fished before and were super excited.  We were limited on time since we were chasing daylight, so they didn't catch anything, but they still enjoyed the experience.

Calvin did a great job on his cast!

Lounging in the hammock after the sun went down.

They're pointing out a frog they spotted.

I slept next to the little boys on the big couch.

Calvin helped with the pancakes in the morning, and Jamie made the adults an omelet.

So, so good to be with this dear friend of mine.  I have tons of memories with Penny all the way back to third grade, so it was fun to get our families together and make some more memories as adults!
